A Breakdown Of The Dany DIY Sewing Project Kit

If you guys can believe it.. The Dany DIY sewing project kit IS HERE! I myself still can't really believe it.. It feels like I have been working on building this first kit for SO LONG. And it's finally, finally here!

This week, I am working on the final details for the e-commerce portion of the site. And I am hoping/praying/literally dying to have the pattern shop open next week, with the Dany pattern & kit up for sale. (Cue me screaming, dancing, crying all at once.)

So this week, in anticipation, I wanted to walk you through everything that will be included in the Dany DIY sewing project kit.

And keep in mind--If you're not a fan of the fabric for this first round of kits.. Although how could you not be?

It joyfully yells out "SUNSHINE!"

The Dany sewing pattern will also be available all on its own. Because I get it. Prints aren't for everyone.

I'm actually not the biggest fan of them myself--But I think prints just work (and look so much better) with the overall design of the Dany.

And keep in mind--I sewed up many, many samples of this pattern. In knits and wovens, prints and solids. And the BEST way that the design came out was in a knit print. But still, I get it.

So yes--Let me start right off by saying that if you aren't a fan of this first fabric, you can definitely still buy the sewing pattern all on its own! But for those of you that are loving the Sunny Daisy print, let's break down exactly what is going to be included in the Dany DIY sewing project kit.

What's in the Dany DIY sewing project kit?

A Breakdown of the Dany DIY Sewing Project Kit: What's in the Kit?

First off, let's just list out everything that is included in a Dany DIY sewing project kit:

  • The Dany Sewing Pattern: Available in sizes XS-XL. Both the Dany Sheath and the Dany Two Piece can be made using this sewing pattern!
  • Sewing Pattern Envelope: A thick, quality envelope that safely stores the sewing pattern & instruction manual.
  • Step-By-Step Instruction Manual: A 16 page booklet with color photos that walks you through everything you need to know about sewing up either style of the Dany.
  • Fabric: 2 1/2 Yards of fabric are included with the kit. This is enough to make either one version of the Dany Sheath, or both pieces that make up the Dany Two Piece.
  • Thread: 1 Spool of matching thread is included. No trips to the fabric store necessary!
  • Clothing Tag: 1 Label is included, to sew into the neckline of either version of the Dany.

Literally EVERYTHING you need to sew up a version of the Dany is included with this DIY sewing project kit. I can promise you that I have worked so incredibly hard to make these kits the absolute best they can be.

And I have sewn up many, many projects using all different kinds of sewing patterns and kits.. So I really think that I have tackled all of the issues that I have had with what is currently on the market.

Now let's walk through exactly what makes each part of the Dany DIY sewing project kit unique.

The Dany DIY sewing project kit: The sewing pattern

A Breakdown of the Dany DIY Sewing Project Kit: The Sewing Pattern

This was one of the hardest parts in putting together the DIY kits--The sewing pattern. And I'm not talking about the drafting of the pattern. That was the easy part.

What I'm talking about is finding someone that could print the sewing pattern--For less than what I could sell them for.

I just so happened to stumble across this AMAZING printer based in the United Kingdom. And not only did they print my sewing patterns.. But they also printed EVERYTHING that went with my sewing patterns. (Stay tuned for more info on this incredibly unique company, Netprinter. A whole post on them is coming your way in a few weeks!)

One thing that I have always, always hated about traditional sewing patterns is that flimsy brown tissue paper they are printed on. It literally drove me absolutely nuts. But the paper MY sewing patterns are printed on is completely different, in the best possible way.

The paper is absolutely beautiful--A perfect thickness.

Not only was Netprinter was able to print the Dany on just two (WHITE!) A0 pages.. But they also made it so that the printing was actually cost effective. I can't wait for you guys to see these beautifully unique sewing patterns!

The pattern itself is available in XS-XL and follows traditional US sizing. If sewing the Dany Two Piece, the pattern can be cut out as is. And if sewing the Dany Sheath, a few pieces will just need to be taped together--Literally that's it.

I made it as easy as possible, with clear instructions in the manual on which pieces need to be taped together.

The Dany DIY sewing project kit: The sewing pattern envelope

The sewing pattern envelope is one of the parts of the kit that I am happiest about. It just looks so so fantastic. And yes--My badass UK printer, Netprinter, also printed the envelopes for the sewing patterns.

Not only does the envelope store the sewing pattern, but it has all of the sizing, fabric, and trim information on it. (Just in case you won't be buying the full DIY sewing project kit!) What I love most about the envelopes is just how THICK they are.

Yet another thing that drove me insane with traditional sewing patterns was just how flimsy the envelopes were. If you used the sewing pattern more than once, the envelope was toast.

It will take quite a lot of wear and tear to rip these sewing pattern envelopes. And I think that is a major, major bonus!

The Dany DIY sewing project kit: The instruction manual

A Breakdown of the Dany DIY Sewing Project Kit: The Instruction Manual

Putting together the step-by-step instruction manual for the Dany was a bit time consuming. (Perhaps one of the most time consuming parts of the entire process, tbh.)

The instruction manual walks you through how to sew both the Dany Sheath and the Dany Two Piece. Step by step, with full color photos.

What I absolutely loath about traditional sewing patterns isn't the pattern itself or the envelope.. (Although I definitely wasn't happy with those either.)

But what drove me 100% insane were the instructions.

If you have ever sewn up a traditional sewing pattern, then you know what I'm talking about.

All that they provide is this folded black and white page with the most confusing instructions EVER. Oh, and no photos either--Just technical illustrations that really aren't all that technical.

I feel like creative individuals (like those that SEW) are visual learners, for the most part. So being able to see what is being done VISUALLY is a big, big deal. So that is really what I wanted to convey with this instruction manual. Not only do I walk you through the process verbally, but I SHOW it with full color photos.

And to me, that makes all the difference.

The Dany DIY sewing project kit: The fabric

A Breakdown of the Dany DIY Sewing Project Kit: The Fabric

While I definitely plan on launching the Dany DIY sewing project kit in multiple fabric options eventually, this first fabric truly is a beautiful one--An organic cotton knit from Birch Fabrics.

The base color is this beautiful golden mustard that is then printed with tiny white daisies. Seriously so, so cute and perfect for summer! (Also, I think, a fitting first fabric for our first DIY sewing project kit--Those sweet little flowers!)

Last week, I wrote a post about WHY organic cotton matters. Because it really, really does. And as a business owner, I want to provide you with the most ethical, sustainable, and responsible products that I possibly can.

And the fabric is a big part of this product.

So I really wanted to make sure I was providing you with something beautiful and high quality. Which I really think this knit does! While this sewing pattern was made for a knit fabric, it can also be sewn in a woven.

In the manual, I go into what would need to be adjusted if sewing a woven version (mostly just the waistband on the skirt) so it's definitely doable! (You can see a woven version of the Dany Two Piece in this post I wrote about knit versus woven fabric.)

2 1/2 Yards is provided with the kit--Enough to make either a Dany Sheath or a matching Dany Two Piece!

Cutting is tight though, so make sure to follow the instruction manual cutting guide closely. Stay tuned for more fabrics & colors for the Dany DIY sewing project kit!

The Dany DIY sewing project kit: The thread

A Breakdown of the Dany DIY Sewing Project Kit: The Thread

One of my biggest peeves when it comes to a DIY sewing project kit is when thread isn't included. I mean--It's an absolute necessity when sewing up a project. You literally cannot sew up a project without thread.

So why on earth would it not be included?! Literally blows my mind.

The thread that I ended up going with is a multi-purpose poly thread from a US based company called Superior Threads. I have used their thread before and I really love it--Seriously never had an issue sewing with it.

As I said before with the fabric, I really wanted every part of this kit to be of a high quality. And I think Superior Threads has always nailed that! No more having to run to the fabric store to get matching thread before being able to start a project! #annoying

The Dany DIY sewing project kit: The clothing tag

A Breakdown of the Dany DIY Sewing Project Kit: The Clothing Tag

And last, but certainly not least, the clothing tag. Because is a garment really finished if it doesn't have a clothing tag?

Not adding clothing tags to my sewing projects never really bothered me.. Until I started adding clothing tags to my sewing projects. It literally completely changes the look and feel of a project, without question.

Which is why I created these cute little clothing tags to sew on to the neckline facings of both versions of the Dany. I think "made by the flora modiste & me" is a cute way to say that we couldn't do this without each other--Quite literally!

Not a single DIY sewing project kit I have purchased in the past includes a clothing tag, so I hope you love this little touch as much as I do.

The Flora Modiste pattern shop opening soon!

So. Pretty exciting, right?! I hope you are as psyched for this product as I am. As I mentioned above--I am working so, so hard this week on getting the e-commerce section of the site set up.

So hopefully next week the Dany sewing pattern & DIY sewing project kit will be up for sale. And then depending on how that goes, shipping the week after! Fingers crossed, ladies.

For all of you that have been with me these last 6 months while I have been developing this product, THANK YOU. It has been quite the journey, and (even though I sometimes forget) I am so thankful to be on it with you.

Stay tuned my loves! And make sure to let me know of any questions you might have about either the sewing pattern or the kits below. GET READY!
